Classes, Workshops and Special Events


 

We hope you'll join us at Portland Fiber Gallery & Weaving Studio. Our classes are small and participants receive lots of one-on-one assistance.

 Advance registration is required. To register for a class, you may call with a credit card or mail a check. Of course you are always welcome to come by and pay in person. Class fees are non-refundable.

DYEING CLASSES 

Weft Ikat Dyeing and Weaving With Shelia Shanti
Using Natural dyes you will create a specific individually patterned weft to make a unique 24 inch wide cotton scarf or table runner.  Cutch, Logwood or Cochineal will be the colors available.  This Ikat method creates a specific geometric repeat that is dyed onto the weft before you begin to weave.  Enrollment is limited to 4. Some weaving and Dyeing experience is recommended. 
 
Cotton yarns, dyes, use of a loom and extra studio time outside of class included.

Cost:  $265, 6 Saturdays 1:00-4:00  starting Feb 6.

Natural Dyeing for the Beginner with Rachel Bingham                  Curious about natural dyeing and how it all works? Come find out.  We will use Madder, Cochineal or Fustic dyes.  Bring an apron or wear old clothes.

 

Cost: $65 includes some  fiber or yarn to work with. Additional yarns and fibers will be available for purchase.  

Saturday, Jan 30 from 12:00-4:00  Class meets at 68 Washington Ave

 

Socks of a Different Color  Want to make your own unique sock yarn?  Come play in our dye kitchen and create a one of a kind skein of yarn. Class meets at 68 Washington Avenue
 
Cost  $35.00 includes a skein of yarn.

Using Your Handspun Yarn You've learned to spin and now you have a stash of handspun yarn.  Bring it in and we will give you plenty of ideas for projects and patterns that work with what you've spun. We have Knitter's Looms available for rental if you want to try them out.  If you would rather stick to knitting we can help you match what you have to a project you like. Bring your own handspun

Cost $65: includes any materials needed to augment your handspun

Felting

Anatomy for Needlefelters  Deb Hart will help you improve on firming up limbs, making fish lips, sculpting facial features. She will also talk about mixing and adding color and  exploring what those other needles do etc.

Sat., Feb. 13, 11-1 

Cost: $35 incl. materials

Go Felt a Fish: Learn the basics of needle-felting and make an adorable fish or two from your imagination. Ages 9 and up.
Cost: $35 includes  materials 

Any Friday afternoon - 3:00-5:00         Class meets at 229 Congress St

Make a Felted Bag Using wool, water, heat and agitation create a one of a kind bag. It's magic.

Sat. Feb. 27, 1-5 pm

Cost: $85 includes materials


 Spinning Classes meet at 229 Congress St.

Spin on a Drop Spindle  Low tech but very portable. 

2 Saturdays 2:00-3:30 beginning any Saturday. Call ahead to schedule.                                                                   Cost:  $65 includes spindle, fiber and a copy of Spin It

 

Introduction to Spinning   This class will give you an introduction to handling fibers and take you through making plied yarn. Classes are held at the following times:

Sunday 1-2:30 Start: Feb. 7,  4 wks

Tuesday 5:30-7:00. Start: Feb. 2, 4 wks

Thurs  12:00-1:00  Start: Feb. 4, 6 wks

 

Cost: $120 includes fiber and wheel rental.

Renting a spinning wheel enables you to take it home between class meetings to practice.  Try several wheels to find the right one for you.  When you decide to buy your wheel, we will credit your rental fees.

Weaving Classes classes meet at 68 Washington Ave. and are held Wednesday 5:30–8 pm  -OR- Thursday  2:30–5 pm

Introduce Me to Weaving:   Try your hand at weaving.  We’ll do the hard part and put the warp on for you.  Play with color and pattern variations based on a tabby threading. This class meets for four sessions.

Start: Weds., Feb. 3 or Thurs., Feb. 4

Cost: $125 includes materials

Beginning 4 Harness Weaving:   Learn to warp a loom and produce a scarf or table runner using color and pattern variations with a 4 harness loom and a tabby threading. This class meets for 6 sessions.

Start: Weds, Feb. 3  OR Thurs., Feb. 4

Cost $225  includes materials. 

Beyond Beginner Weaving:  Build on the skills you learned in the beginner class and learn to read a draft.

Inkle Weaving It's been a while since we've offered and Inkle Weaving Class. Our intern Dana has been brushing up and is ready to teach you all about making belts, bookmarks, headbands etc.

Sat. Feb 6 & 13, 3-5

Cost: $55 includes materials. Bring an inkle loom if you have one or borrow one of ours.
